The hideous puns on "gnomon" ("something that indicates or points to") that all the participants came up with were suppressed for the purposes of naming "The Gnomon Show," though David Finkelstein's set of "gnomic utterances" remained, and the advertising algorithms on my e-mail program regularly tossed up chances to buy "Woodland Gnomes."

I find myself pondering the nature of multimedia performance in 2008, especially as done by folks with academic credentials in other disciplines. But I doubt that I shall reach any postable conclusions. Since other LJers rather rigorously keep their non-LJ lives private (except for those whose LJs are almost entirely a form of philosophical autobiography), I find it attractive to remind LJ readers of the obvious fact that for most of the other people whose blogs we read, the good stuff all takes place offstage. Which explains much about why we so rarely hear from them.
