Markides' slightly novelized books (reconstructed conversations reflect real events and persons) have always included undertones of Cypriot politics so I hope to see some kind of response to the island's current economic troubles. It's possible to bracket his personal beliefs and read the books on several levels.

I didn't actually make my previous post public for nearly a week because it seemed advisable to add a footnote beforehand...again, one assertion requires another supporting assertion before it makes complete sense, which is why my observations always end up in hopelessly convoluted condition and then my readers still misread them.

David Brooks, whose observations on neuroscience are more tolerable than his politics, has an interesting op-ed piece in today's New York Times that happens to repeat some of the points I have quoted previously from the remarks of non-reductionist neuroscientists. Unfortunately, the "Beyond the Brain" column is behind the NYT paywall and I can't access it online thanks to some glitch affecting print subscribers' digital access at the moment.
