long silences while contemplating
May. 6th, 2013 10:14 amI have written more friends-only posts than public ones lately, and thought about but not written even more because of a combination of being preoccupied with writing for artsatl.com and burnaway.org on the one hand, and wanting to get the ideas clarified on the other. (Readers of the friends posts will question the "wanting to get the ideas clarified" assertion, but they should have access to the ideas that are even more dubious and/or undeveloped.)
An anecdote that is relevant to some of my current concerns, however: Conversing with my dentist before my semiannual checkup, I remarked on his previously made comment that he liked science because in it, something either is or is not. "Perception is not reality," he added to my remark.
Then during the examination of my teeth his assistant commented, "...and you have a crown replacement noted for number 30." "Why on earth would I have thought number 30's crown needs to be replaced? There must be something in the X-ray I'm not remembering...oh, I see, it looks horrible, but it's probably been that way ever since it was put in."
Since he had reminded me of the need for a replacement for a full year, I was too relieved to realize that I ought to be amused. Perception may not be reality, but it certainly governs our relationship to it.
