I wrote a footnote to the architectural essay (a typically long footnote) that is on another machine and hasn't been posted for a number of reasons, including the unaccountable failure of internet service in my neighborhood over the weekend.

I was surprised at the extent to which the question of the grid created conversation as to what I was getting at...it's just that it's spoken of so often as the foundational element of twentieth century modernism that Higgins' citation of its functional uses in the layout of cities and so on (and on and on) is a refreshing reminder of just how many uses the lattice graph or whatever has now and has had for centuries.

Those who remember Dürer's considerably sexier illustration of the uses of his gridded
perspective device will have their memory jogged by this rather less lurid photograph of a reconstruction of it (shown along with a musical instrument and a couple of participant-observers):
