An extremely interesting summary, from Scientific American Mind, of the most recent state of research on storytelling:

It's particularly curious that the researchers, at least, find evidence for universal themes in cultures that don't share those themes in their official culture...which suggests once more than cultures are unable to program the individuals in them completely, even though with our capacity for neuroplasticity we can not only be programmed against our usual ingrained scripts but reprogram them ourselves, to the point of altering the underlying biological structures, within obvious limits.
This relates to a post that has been sitting unposted thanks to my inability to get to a wireless location for a couple of days. I'll try to modify it appropriately in light of this new information (not all that new, dating from September 18 or earlier, but it took me a few days to encounter it).
I may take this occasion to wish my handful of readers a most happy Feast of the Conception of Saint John Baptist.
